Moving checklist

A moving utility checklist that prevents missed steps

Work from the date you become responsible for the property: identify every service, confirm providers by address, schedule starts or transfers, keep confirmations private, inspect service on arrival, and verify the first statements.

Two to four weeks before responsibility

Lead times vary. Start early without changing another occupant's account.

  1. List electricity, water, sewer or septic, internet, trash, and any community-managed services.
  2. Check the lease or closing documents for responsibility dates.
  3. Use the ZIP lookup as a shortlist and confirm the complete address.
  4. Ask providers about lead time, deposits, appointments, and documents.

During the final week

Keep service confirmations, but do not put account numbers, identification, or payment details into a public checklist.

  1. Confirm start dates and installation windows.
  2. Arrange authorized property access.
  3. Save electric outage and utility-emergency contacts.
  4. Find the current trash schedule and moving-box rules.

On arrival and after the first bill

Do not manipulate sealed meters or unfamiliar equipment. Report missing, unsafe, leaking, or repeatedly tripping systems through the appropriate provider, property manager, or qualified professional.

  1. Confirm essential service is active.
  2. Record visible meter readings privately when appropriate.
  3. Check the service address, dates, deposits, and approved charges on each first statement.
  4. Store provider and outage contacts where the household can reach them.
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How early should I begin the moving utility checklist?

Start two to four weeks before the responsibility date when possible, then confirm each provider's current lead time and any appointment or document requirements.

Should I cancel the current occupant's utility service?

No. Schedule only the service start or transfer you are authorized to request, using the responsibility date established by the lease or closing documents.

What should I verify on the first utility bill?

Check the service address, responsibility date, deposit, meter information when shown, and every approved charge. Contact the provider if any detail is wrong.
